Lawn Care

Mow your new lawn between 7-10days from installation if installing in an active growing period, (if laying in winter this timeframe will not be so frequent, once a month is usually sufficient).

The aim of mowing should be to keep the grass short while maintaining sufficient leaf cover for photosynthesis. This allows rapid recovery, keeps the soil cool, protects the roots from scorching and suppresses weeds.

Close mowing leads to sun scorching and root damage in summer and reduced vigour in winter. If grass is allowed to grow too long, cutting will expose brown stems giving a scalped appearance. The lawn will look patchy, recovery will be slow, weed growth will be encouraged and thatch will develop. A height between 12mm and 20mm is suitable for most lawns, fine grasses being cut closer than coarse grasses. The aim is to avoid removing more than one third of the leaf material at any one mowing.

Frequency of cutting depends on the type of lawn, how well it is growing and the time of year. Lawn grasses recommended for WA conditions grow rapidly in summer and very slowly in winter.

Clippings should be removed from lawns after cutting as they encourage diseases and pests if left on the lawn. Apart from looking unsightly clippings can form an organic seal, which may exclude air and water.

LAWN MOWERS

Cylinder or rotary mowers provide good mowing results when properly adjusted and sharpened. Mowing height should be raised slightly in late April or early May.

This increase in leaf area increases the carbohydrate, which is manufactured in the leaves and stored in the roots for winter. Better cover of the ground surface will also help prevent winter weed germination.

De-thatching of lawns, which have become too tall and spongy, should be done in spring with complete removal of all material as close as possible to the ground.

WATERING

Once your lawn is established you should water during the recommended times set by the Water Corporation. It would also be necessary to use a wetting agent on a regular basis to ensure that your lawn is getting the maximum benefit of your watering.Mow your new lawn between 7-10days from installation if installing in an active growing period, (if laying in winter this timeframe will not be so frequent, once a month is usually sufficient).
